7/00 - Chapter 7
2 min read

This chapter looks at TVET from the perspective of the TVET “demand” side: The Industries. Obviously, the term "TVET industry" does not exist as there are no specific industries that are strictly TVET’s. Instead, this chapter will delve into what is encompassed by "industries" within the context of TVET, emphasizing their integral role in shaping and defining TVET programs.
Furthermore, the chapter will discuss the imperative for TVET strategists to have a profound understanding of the industries they serve before setting their TVET agendas. By thoroughly examining industry needs, trends, and future directions, TVET can align its objectives more effectively with industry demands, thereby enhancing the relevance and impact of vocational training.
This exploration aims to highlight the symbiotic relationship between industries and TVET, demonstrating how strategic collaboration and deep sector knowledge are crucial for crafting educational programs that genuinely meet the evolving needs of both the economy and the labor market.
Three Questions
Based on this chapter, here are some important questions to prompt critical thinking among policymakers, politicians, and TVET strategists as they plan their local TVET initiatives:
Strategic Alignment: Reflecting on the Industry Maturity Continuum (IMC), where does your region's primary industries fall within this framework? How will this positioning influence your strategies in developing or reforming TVET programs to meet both current and future industrial needs?
Cultural and Economic Specificity: How do your region’s unique cultural and economic characteristics influence the design and implementation of TVET programs? What considerations must be made to ensure these programs are culturally appropriate and economically viable?
Innovation and Adaptation: In regions where industries may be complacent or lagging, how can TVET act as a catalyst for innovation and advancement? What specific strategies can be employed to encourage industries to adopt advanced technologies and practices that may initially seem beyond their current capabilities?
